NBC Sunday Night Football
Once again in 2020, Senior Designer Paul Lohr joined the NFL on the road to light Sunday Night Football on NBC. The weekly broadcast took him to stadiums across America, from Foxborough, Massachusetts to Santa Clara, California. Each stadium booth is unique and requires its own lighting design. Some of the challenges he faced included very small booths with architectural elements that had to be worked around and booths with no place to hang lights requiring him to rig positions. Lohr’s design also had to contend with the ambient light that flows through the stadium windows and pollutes the anchors’ positions and the LED wall behind them. Stadium by stadium, Lohr surmounted these challenges to light a clean crisp show in the midst of a pandemic. Photos by Sports Video Group and Paul Lohr.

It is enclosed by colonial blue archways and panel walls that can be moved to reveal expansive windows. The table is cleverly lit to be shot in the round without hidden cameras. Todd’s main desk is located in another area of the studio with the newsroom as the background. The colonial style desk is brought into the twenty-first century with LEDs and a warm vibrant red color. Galen’s beautiful lighting design of both of the large studio illuminates the modern and traditional elements providing a clean crisp design. Senior Designer Niel Galen led the design team, which included Lighting Designer Dan Rousseau, Gaffer Eric Kasprisin, and Best Boy Sean Linehan. LDG’s lighting design illuminated the east patio of the Perez Art Museum Miami with scenic Miami Bay and MacArthur Causeway serving as a soft backdrop. The stunning outdoor patio with its asymmetrical concrete pillars was accented with decorative hanging planters creating a handsome stage on which to focus on President Trump and Savanah Guthrie.
The dynamics of the outdoor space presented a challenge for all departments. Southern Florida has strong winds and sudden downpours and the majority of the lighting equipment was not weather rated. The asymmetrical concrete pillars and 30ft high planters suspended from the roof of the east patio presented obstacles for lighting the stage. Instead, they were incorporated into the design and became a canvas on which to introduce color. Commendations to our design team for working through the unusual design challenges to create a beautiful production.
ABC News Presidential Town Hall with Joe Biden

A unique aspect of this Town Hall was that each of the 22 Pennsylvania voters stood at their seat to ask former Vice President Biden questions. Typically, the voter would have been escorted to a single Question and Answer Position to ask their question. The change was due to COVID-19 health precautions and made for a more complicated production since it greatly increased the positions that were lit and the camera angles used. The design team took on this challenge and carefully lit all positions for a memorable Town Hall experience.
